Course overview
This course is developed with an aim to create a workforce of people with pre-requisite skill sets to control infections, especially within public facing services. You will be taught how to minimize infections at your workplace, how to implement better standards of cleanliness and hygiene, how to minimize risks during shift changes, and more.
Course description
A set of skills to follow organisational infection prevention and control policies and procedures, including implementing standard and transmission based precautions and responding to infection risks in the workplace.
Skilled Capital Eligibility (COVID Clean Eligibility)
As a minimum a student must, for the duration of the enrolment, be:
- an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand passport holder
- resident for more than six (6) months, or
- a person who holds a visa that is identified as being eligible, and
- living or working in WA, and
- at least 15 years of age, and
- employed in a customer-facing role at the time of enrolment.
COVID-19 has impacted infection control standards in a range of job roles across the economy. Return to work with the skills and knowledge to implement strategies and practices that will help you safeguard yourself, your colleagues and your customers from COVID-19.

About the National Infection Control Training Fund
The Australian Government together with state and territory governments have established a new $80 million Infection Control Training Fund to fast-track fee free (or low cost) infection control training to support the re-opening of customer-facing businesses nationwide. The infection control short courses are the first national training products developed by the new Australian Industry Skills Emergency Response Sub-Committee in response to COVID-19.
Up to 5,500 training places for this accredited training will be available in SA, with funding from the federal government’s $80 million Infection Control Training Fund including matched funding of $2.67 million from the state government.
To keep Australian workers safe during COVID-19, the Australian Government has announced four national infection control skill sets endorsed by COAG Skills Council. These skill sets offer nationally recognised training to frontline workers in the retail, food handling, and transport and logistics industries. The infection control skill sets are the first national training products developed by the new Australian Industry Skills Emergency Response Sub-Committee in response to COVID-19.
The Government is working with the states and territories to develop a new National Partnership Agreement with matched funding provisions that will see $80 million available to support this critical infection control training in customer-facing businesses nationwide.
Around 80,000 workers across industries including retail, tourism, hospitality cleaning, security, transport and logistics will pay no fee or a small fee for training previously only widely available in the health sector.

Participants will learn a range of skills, including:
- Hand hygiene practices
- Effective surface cleaning
- Use of personal protective equipment
- Disposal of contaminated waste
- Hazard identification, control and reporting
- Appropriate protocols and responses in the event of an incident
- Knowledge regarding the basis of infection and transmission

Additional Information
This short course is offered fully online, distance delivery, fully on-the-job (by RTO), or via blended delivery. You will require a computer and adequate internet access. To complete the assessment, you will require a mobile device or tablet with video function. CTI provides technical support or help with digital literacy skills. You will be given information on how to access and use the online learning platform (e-Learn). If you are entering this program under Skilled Capital, you must commence within 5 days (from the time of enrolment). All training and assessment for Infection Control Training Products must be completed within 5 weeks of the student record creation date.
